Frequently Asked Questions
Answers to what people ask most before, during, and after a class — registration, choosing the right course, certification validity, and what to expect on class day.
Registering for a Class
Do I need to register in advance, or can I walk in?
Pre-registration is strongly recommended. Class sizes are kept small for hands-on practice time, so seats can fill before the scheduled date. Walk-ins are accommodated when space allows, but registering ahead guarantees your spot and lets you complete any required paperwork before you arrive.
What do I need to bring to class?
A photo ID, comfortable clothing you can kneel and move in, and — if you're recertifying — your current certification card. For AHA courses, students are required to have a current course textbook or access to the corresponding eBook; we'll let you know which one when you register.
What's your cancellation and refund policy?
See our full Cancellation & Refund Policy for complete terms. In short: cancel more than 72 hours ahead for a full refund or free transfer; within 72 hours, you'll get a credit toward a future class rather than a cash refund; no-shows aren't refunded.
Can I reschedule if something comes up?
Yes — contact us as soon as you know you need to reschedule, and we'll move you to the next available session at no charge, subject to the cancellation window above.
Choosing the Right Course
What's the difference between NAEMT and AHA courses?
NAEMT courses (PHTLS, AMLS, GEMS, and others) are prehospital provider courses aimed at EMTs, AEMTs, and paramedics who need field-level trauma and medical assessment training. AHA courses (BLS, ACLS, PALS, Heartsaver) focus on resuscitation — CPR, AED use, and advanced cardiac and pediatric life support — and are required across a much broader range of healthcare roles, from nurses and physicians to EMS providers.
Which course do I actually need?
It depends on your role and who's requiring the certification. If your employer or state licensing board specified a course name, that's the one to register for. If you're not sure, send us your job title and certification level and we can point you to the right course.
Do I need to already be an EMT to take an AHA course?
No. AHA courses like Heartsaver CPR/AED/First Aid are open to the general public with no healthcare background required. BLS, ACLS, and PALS are aimed at healthcare providers but don't require an EMT certification specifically — nurses, physicians, and other clinical staff take these too.
Certification & Cards
How long does my certification last?
Most AHA certifications (BLS, ACLS, PALS, Heartsaver) are valid for two years from your course completion date. NAEMT course cards vary by course — check the specific course details at registration, or see our recertification page for how renewal works in New York State.
What happens if I don't pass the skills check or written exam?
You'll have the opportunity to review and retest on the specific skill or content area you didn't pass, typically before you leave class or shortly after. We'll walk you through exactly what's needed to complete your certification.
How soon will I get my certification card?
AHA courses issue an eCard, which is emailed to you after you successfully complete the course. NAEMT completion cards are issued through NAEMT and can take a little longer depending on the course. Your instructor will tell you exactly what to expect on class day.
Class Day Logistics
How long do classes run?
Course length varies by certification level and whether it's an initial or renewal course. Exact start and end times are listed on every session in our class schedule.
What if I arrive late?
Because courses build skills progressively and often require minimum contact hours to issue a certification, significant lateness may mean rescheduling to a different session. Please contact us as soon as possible if you're running behind.
Do you offer group or agency training?
Yes — we run private and on-site sessions for departments, hospitals, schools, and other organizations that need to train a group together. Request a group session and we'll work out the details with you.
Still have a question?
